Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is the essential first step for anyone looking to ride a moped or motorcycle on public roads in the UK. Our CBT course is designed to give new riders the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to ride safely and responsibly. Whether you’re completely new to two wheels or looking to refresh your riding skills, our experienced instructors will guide you through each stage of the training.

The course covers the fundamental principles of motorcycle riding, including understanding the controls, carrying out essential safety checks and using the motorcycle correctly. You’ll learn about protective clothing and equipment, basic maintenance, and the importance of being properly prepared before every ride. Our instructors provide clear, practical guidance throughout the day, helping you develop safe habits from the very beginning.

You will then progress to practical riding skills in a controlled environment. This includes moving off and stopping, changing gear, steering, braking, manoeuvring and maintaining proper control of the motorcycle. As your confidence develops, you’ll learn how to deal with common road situations and make safe, effective decisions while riding.

The final stage of the CBT takes place on public roads, where you’ll put your skills into practice under the supervision of an instructor. You’ll learn how to observe effectively, position yourself safely, communicate with other road users and respond appropriately to different traffic conditions. The aim is to develop a responsible approach to riding and give you the practical foundation needed to continue building your experience.

On successful completion of the course, you’ll receive your CBT certificate (DL196), allowing you to ride a moped or motorcycle as a learner in accordance with UK licensing requirements. CBT is not a motorcycle test, but it is an important foundation for becoming a safe and confident rider. Our goal is to make your first step into motorcycling informative, enjoyable and focused on developing skills that will stay with you throughout your riding journey.
